Vacation Tracking & Requests

On its face a simple project, to take the problematic old paper process and move it to a modern web based one, I looked at this application as an opportunity to create an experience that was more than just filing the correct paperwork. I got to work closely with end users of the application, from administrative assistants to the business owners, to discover gaps in the existing process. The first I solved before one even signs in to the system; the calendar on the sign in page contains the official company holidays, which were otherwise very difficult to find.

Once inside the application there is one question that is more important than any other to answer, "How much vacation do I have available?" That I answered with one dramatically over-sized number. There are many more subtle questions that employees need to know about, how accrual works, which hours carry over and which don't, and what what's up with vacation caps. I embedded the answers to these questions throughout the application, so that not only does the employee's paperwork no longer get lost somewhere between California and Illinois, but the vacation request is made in a more informed and efficient manner. In the United States we just don't get enough vacation to go wasting it when a personal day (which does not carry over) would do.
